Lionel Shriver is an American journalist and author, and won the 2005 Orange Prize for We Need to Talk About Kevin - about the relationship between a career mother and her disturbingly cruel son. Born Margaret Ann Shriver into a deeply religious family, she changed her name at the age of 15 to Lionel because as a tomboy she felt that a conventionally male name was a better fit.
