Introducing the Apple iPad

Published by SarahP on 27 Jan 2010 at 6:37 pm under BookRabbit

Apple iPadApple has finally put an end to the speculation with the launch of the iPad. We hope, like us you enjoyed the spectacle of last night’s event. Of course, the most interesting aspect for bookworms is the launch of iBooks – the online book store which Apple hopes will revolutionise the publishing world just as iTunes shook up the music industry.

What we’re reading this week

Published by SarahP on 19 Jan 2010 at 3:09 pm under BookRabbit, books

We thought it was about time we shared our current reads with you. First though, please welcome our newest rabbit to bounce down into the burrow – Woodie – he’s our new digital creative who joined us last week and has already settled right in, given his shared interest in zombie film making (with some of the team I hasten to add – not all of us are fascinated by flesh-eating cinematography). He also drinks green tea, but we’re trying to ignore that. Anyway, say hi to him if you’re on Twitter, he’s @Wooodie (yes, with three o’s – bet he gets asked that a lot).

Just After Sunset

Woodie ‘I’m reading Stephen King’s, Just After Sunset a collection of short stories. I used to read King a lot when I was younger and loved his style of writing. His ability to instantly capture the reader and submerge them in his dark and usually twisted world is excellently shown off with the short story format. Some of the stories are more like tales of the unexpected than horror. Haven’t finished it yet but would recommend it as a great introduction to Stephen King or a worthy insight into his ability to briefly dunk you into his cadaverous cup of macabre tea!

Published by SarahP on 17 Jan 2010 at 10:28 pm under BookRabbit

The Little Stranger

Monday 18 January A quick update… our blog has been quoted in The Bookseller this morning – Trade holds breath as sales lift for ‘The TV Book Club’ titles. The Independent has also posted a review of the programme – Book club begins new chapter without Richard and Judy.

Book bloggers who have also commented on the programme include:

A very brief post just to share our thoughts on the first episode of the new TV Book Club (@tvbookclub) on More 4 (repeated tomorrow at 12.05pm on Channel 4 in case you missed it).

The supposedly ‘featured’ book by Sarah Waters – The Little Stranger – was given such short and superficial treatment at the end of the programme it was barely worth watching. There was a great video of her introducing the book at least, but the discussion by the celeb panel afterwards was very weak with nobody really guiding the conversation or asking any pertinent questions, nor making any conclusions. Didn’t feel the book got a fair crack at all (and I’m reading it at the moment – it’s fantastic! I can promise you it deserves far better praise than it got from any of the panel).

Exclusive interview and giveaway with Melissa Jones

Published by SarahP on 14 Jan 2010 at 3:33 pm under BookRabbit

The Hidden Heart of Emily Hudson is Melissa Jones‘ third novel. It tells the story of Emily, an orphan, the sole member of her family not claimed by consumption. She is expelled from her boarding school for her ‘many faults’ and ‘extravagant friendship with a fellow pupil’ and dispatched into the care of her distant and cold uncle, to take residence at the family’s Newport beach house at the outbreak of the Civil War. Her cousin William becomes Emily’s saviour in those first lonely months, but his patronage soon turns darker and more controlling as Emily’s spirit and vibrancy are at odds with the expectations of American society…

We spoke to Melissa about the book and her writing life. Read the full interview, and listen to the audio version. For a chance to win a copy of the book, don’t forget to enter our competition at the end of the interview.

Can men do book clubs?

Published by SarahP on 07 Jan 2010 at 12:04 am under BookRabbit

Hello and happy new year BookRabbiters! Welcome to our first blog of 2010. It would have come earlier, but our little paws were frozen to the keyboard. Brrrrr! We thought we’d warm things up with a hot topic that we tweeted yesterday – are book clubs just for girls, or can boys play too?

Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus
