by Kieron Smith on May 14, 2008 11:23:25 AM We were giving away books based on our personal bookselling skills and our view of what you'd bought - how did we do? Did we hit the spot or miss it by a mile, let us know!

by Martyn Illingworth on May 21, 2008 7:18:04 PM Fantastic! I ordered 'The Library at Night' by Alberto Manguel and was sent 'The Accidental' by Ali Smith free. It's one of those books that I've always meant to read, but just never got around to ordering it - now I don't have to. The free book thing is a *brilliant* idea.

by Sharon S on May 23, 2008 3:54:29 PM I was sent a copy of The Electric MichelAngelo http://www.bookrabbit.com/catalogue/detail/bookid/763038/The-Electric-Michelangelo
this isnt a book i would normally have chosen for myself - I am only a short way into it so far and am liking it :) though i dont tend to read 'historical' fiction so i am not finding it as easy to read as the latest Sophie Kinsella or Marian Keyes ;) Will come back and post on here when i have finished it |
|
|
by Dee Atkin on May 23, 2008 3:59:55 PM I ordered The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath, Two Caravans by Marina Lewycka and 19 Minutes by Jodi Picoult.
My magical mystery book was The Accidental by Ali Smith, and it's spot on. One of those books I've always meant to read, and I can see where my picker was coming from. A top choice! |
|
|
by Miriam Barber on May 23, 2008 4:15:27 PM I was sent "Dancing with Eva" by Alan Judd - which I think is a pretty spot-on choice, based on my bookshelves and on my order! (I'd ordered some Patrick Gale books after reading and loving "Rough Music"). I'm looking forward to reading it, it's very "me"!

by Buffy Squirrel on May 24, 2008 9:50:19 AM Goodness, that was fast! The two books I ordered arrived today, along with my gift book--Freakonomics by Steven Levitt & Stephen Dubner.
I shall have to read it before I tell you how good a match it is :D. |

by Beverley S on May 24, 2008 12:02:26 PM My free book arrived this morning and I am very impressed :) I would have chosen the book myself if I had known about it but am very grateful to the BR for selecting this book for me - a gold star for recognising topics which would interest me.
The book I received is 'Reading Lolita in Tehran' (A memoir in Books) by Azar Nafisi. I even love the cover of the book and would be delighted to add this to my bookshelf. Thank you for my free book which will be a good follow up when I have finished my current book. I am very pleased with the choice made for me :) A new author for me too. The choice was very much 'me' I just love to 'read and learn' and am not so much of a 'read to escape' person. Well done BR :) |

by Sion GC on Jun 2, 2008 2:17:39 PM Just wanted to say many thanks for the free book - the choice was spot on. I was sent Engleby by Sebastian Faulks, a book which was on my 'to buy' list, so full marks for the choice. I've read Birdsong and Charlotte Gray, so am looking forward to this one, especially as I live a little way outside Cambridge. Will have to wait a little before I get to read it though, as my husband's stolen it and is really enjoying it!

by cricket ... on Jun 5, 2008 9:59:17 AM A big thanks from me too! Like everyone else here, I'm pleased with your choice. I got "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" in a new translation by Simon Armitage. I read this ages ago, but obviously in a very dreary and plodding rendition -- this one spirited and lively and keeps the humour.
You are infinitely better at recommendations than a certain oversized, online everything-seller that shall remain nameless. When I got recommendations from their automated program it was for things like "100 Years of Chewing Gum Wrappers!" or "Dummies Guide to Reading the Phone Book". Yes, as a lover of good quality literature, this is right up my alley! :) The personal touch makes all the difference! |

by Sharon S on Jun 6, 2008 8:18:42 PM I didnt end up doing so well with the first choice of book for me (historical fiction is so not me but i did give it a go). I have passed it on to my mother in law though ;) so hope she will like it.
However a 2nd order i placed with BookRabbit meant another free book - and this time i was sent 'One Red Paperclip' http://www.bookrabbit.com/catalogue/detail/bookid/1820392/One-Red-Paperclip-How-a-Small-Piece-of-Stationery-Turned-into-a-Great-Big-Adventure which i loved - so thank you :) |

by Gavin Conn on Jun 7, 2008 6:00:09 PM I got Donna Tart's Secret History. I have never read any of her books, so really looking forward to it. Thanks!
P.S. love the badge and bookmarks on the invoice |

by Matthew Crossman on Jul 2, 2008 9:35:20 AM My free book arrived this morning, "The Helmet of Horror" by Victor Pelevin.
Not a book I would have considered myself having never heard anything about it nor even seen it in a shop before. What amazed me was that I have posted up one bookshelf which contained no references to any 'myth' books, nor ancient histories yet I do have bookshelves loaded with these types of books. Book Rabbit has managed (how, I do not know) to send me a free book which is perfect to the things I am interested in. I am amazed. A quick glance around the internet has shown me that this book is one of a series of like minded books, all of which I shall now be tracking down. The free book arrived but an hour ago and I have already read half of it. Well done Book Rabbit and thank you for the book. I am mightily impressed. |

by Michal Martin on Jul 2, 2008 2:43:55 PM You did very well giving me the book by Michael Faber. I've actually met the autor myself and I've had some pancakes with him when he and his wife visited the library I had worked in two years ago in Poland. Great choice !

by Timothy Rowe on Jul 3, 2008 3:19:54 PM I'm quite startled -- you either have an /incredible/ matching algorithm or I've been very lucky. A C Grayling's "The Reason of Things" is /exactly/ the sort of think I'd pick up to read on a flight, and I've got a few coming up -- but I can't doe the life of me see how you could get to it from the books I listed. Many thanks, and well done!

by Debbie Curwen on Jul 3, 2008 3:36:45 PM I received my free book from tagging my bookshelf... unfortunatley it was a book I'd already tagged on it (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly). Loved it though (and mine is a keeper) so I'm sure I'll find a friend who wouldn't mind one either.

by Wordy Rappinghood on Jul 4, 2008 5:48:09 PM I recieved The Helmet of Horror by Victor Pelevin.
Not something I would have selected form the shelves but it seems interesting and I will certainly read it. |

|
by Rachael Beale on Jul 5, 2008 1:15:40 AM Sadly I already have a copy of my free book (Purple Hibiscus) (though the cover of this one - the new Harper Perennials - is MUCH prettier than mine :-)). Never mind.
Intrigued as to how it was picked - I realised afterwards that half the books I'd tagged on my shelf were Victorian-pastiche mystery-type books so half-expected something in the same vein... |
|
|
by Claire Wright on Jul 5, 2008 8:35:51 PM Thank you so much for my free book, "Long Way Down" by Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman. I read and loved the book of the first series a long time ago, but still hadn't got round to buying the book for the second series so this was the perfect book choice, I'm delighted! xx Thank you again. xx

|
by Keylime Pi on Jul 6, 2008 9:57:23 PM I got a Pat Barker book which looks interesting. Did try to read one of her other ones but couldn't get into to it. This was on my shelf picture though so i can see why you picked it. But thanks for the book - must be bloomin difficult to pick books out for strangers.

|
|
by Rachel Talbot on Jul 7, 2008 12:51:15 PM I got Jonathon Coe's "What a Carve Up!". Never heard of him or the book before, but having only read a few pages it looks like it's going to be pretty good!
Thanks again! |
|
|
by Su-Ching Lee on Jul 7, 2008 2:08:29 PM I got 'The Heart of Things: Applying Philosophy to the 21st century' by A.C. Grayling.
Not something I would normally pick at a bookstore but I've read a couple of pages so far and its proving to be pretty good and something I will enjoy immensely. Thanks so much! |

by Joanne Miller on Jul 7, 2008 4:32:40 PM Many thanks for my book - I thought it was likely that I'd get something I'd already read as I feel like I have read a lot of books - but no, I hadn't. It was an Amy Tan, not someone I'm particularly drawn to, but for no logical reason, so a good choice. I've leant it to my partner to read first as they are in an Amy Tan phase at the moment! Very impressed by speed and quality of dispatch. Will be using you to purchase future books for sure!

by Cathy Grouchey on Jul 7, 2008 7:00:29 PM Thank you very much for the free book. I received Cecelia Ahern's P.S. I Love You - not particularly my genre, but have started reading it. xx

by Stephen Saunders on Jul 7, 2008 7:35:34 PM Many thanks for the book received today - Espedair Street by Iain Banks.
Very speedy - I only registered last week! Vaguely remember reading The Wasp Factory many moons ago but wasn't inspired enough to read any of his other books. Will give him another try though, would be rude not to. |

by Rebecca Helbick-Eyre on Jul 8, 2008 4:51:05 PM Thank you for my book! It came yesterday and I think you guys have chosen very well. You sent me"We Were the Mulvaneys" by Joyce Carol Oates. Now I'd never heard of the book but I have read "You Must Remember This" several times which is another one of her books. So really looking forward to getting stuck in though it will not be for a while as it is last in the queue(of books to read).
Thank you once again, Rebecca |
