I just posted my review and suppose I haven't actually read any 'Steampunk' before.

I found this a refreshing read mixing known Victorian London aspects - whitechapel murders, fogged cobbled streets and horse drawn cabs with more modern elements injected - the airships and steam trains running through the streets. I am looking forward to the plots of the next one and are considering buying this one in the special edition! ** Spoiler ** Did everyone else miss the fact that Queen Victoria is still alive in November 1901 thanks to a wheelchair with its own lungs! Genius! |

I love the steampunk genre, but not this particular book. Anyone wants it, it's theirs! Only lightly read, and entirely unchewed by the cat (otoh I had barely got "Mister Pip" out of its wrapper before her teeth sank into the spine).

I started reading yesterday so I am only on about chapter 3. I am finding it puzzling but quite enjoyable. We will see when I finish it though if I can manage to get into the storyline.

Hi Emma
I'll give the reasons properly in my review as I know it's not fair to criticise a book without saying why, and indeed one of the things I am going to say is that I often dislike books that everyone else turns out to love. If any of the others want my copy when I've finished I'll happily pass it on (if it's OK to do that with a proof copy) so they can judge for themselves, but I have to be honest and say I would have given up on this book very early on if I wasn't reviewing it. (If it's any consolation to Snowbooks, Emma, The Needle in the Blood was by far my top read of 2007 and possibly ever, so that does imply a genre thing!) I'll look forward to hearing what others say about The Affinity Bridge - there are a few of us reading it at the moment I think, and it would be good to discuss it properly once everyone's finished. |

Shame you're not enjoying it, Caroline, but please don't assume that others won't. Perhaps it's just not the sort of genre you enjoy.

Case of don't judge a book by it's cover?

Well, I'm still ploughing through this at the moment and, without wanting to be ungrateful for the free book, I have to say that those of you who didn't get a copy aren't missing much!

Got mine too! Yes, the cover is gorgeous - the sort of cover that would make me buy the book without even stopping to see what it was about.
