It's coming up to Christmas again and as usual I will buying my wife some books to read. Trouble is, each year it gets more and more difficult as she has read almost everything. She's a bit of a chick lit fan but rates The Shell Seekers as her all time favourite book. She likes Freya North, Charlotte Bingham, Maeve Binchy and all that type of stuff. More recently she's gone through all the Yummy Mummy books so we can forget them. I think what I am looking for is something new perhaps from an up and coming author but nothing too heavy.

All ideas are welcome.

Dear Andrew,

For some light-hearted chic-lit, I'd recommend anything by Belinda Jones.  Her books are very easy to read.  Some have travel-related themes, so quite nice for a bit of escapism during the cold winter months.

Hope you find some suitable books for her.

Susannah

Kathy Lette writes very funny chick-lit and I also enjoy reading books by Colette Caddle if I'm looking for something light-hearted Smile

My mum and my sister love the M.C. Beaton Agatha Raisin series. I have read them too, and I can saythey are funny, light hearted detective stories. It might be worth trying out a copy? There are about 20 the novels, so if she like one, she will get a lot of reading out of the series. The first one in the series is 'Quiche of Death'. A great title! My other recomendation, which I recommend to evryone is 'Tennyson's Gift' by Lynne Truss. This is very different from anything else she has written. A very witty book, and if your wife enjoyed things like 'Alice in Wonderland', then she will enjoy this, I would think.

I love Agatha Raisin!! What about Mike Gayle - he writes great fiction that would suit both a man and a woman.

Samantha! At last another fan. I think I have three more books to go  before I have read them all. My only worry is hat  might start on the Hamish MacBeth books and have to read all 20 or so of them too! Have you read Elizabeth Peters's Amelia Peabody books. Similar style. A great way to pass a couple of hours, if all you want is pure entertainment!

Thanks everyone. I've just made my first order on bookrabbit and have bought most of the authors mentioned.

Agatha Raisin is certainly a new name to me so will be interesting to see if she likes it. Feel free to keep suggesting. It's her birthday early next year so I'll have to go through all of this again.

Fidelity Files is a great title by a new American author.  It is very funny and light hearted, but I think its a bit more intelligent than some other chick lit that I've read...
