Just for Today: Daily Meditations for Recovering Addicts

I was a crack addict and had to serve a sentence due to acts were done under the influence of drugs. When my family disowned me and the love of my life issued me an ultimatum to either get my act together or risk losing her, I decided enough was enough. Once I served my sentence, I got enrolled in a rehab program, and after a stay of one year at the center, I was finally free of crack physically and mentally.

When I was leaving the center, I was given a copy of this book by my counselor and not a single day passes when I do not thank him for the beautiful gift.

As part of my goal to stay clear of crack, I read this book daily. Reading it helps me to keep my sanity. Reading Just for Today tells me that I am not an addict anymore and I need to be positive in my life and face my problems head-on.

Since I started reading this book, not once has the thought of using crack crossed my mind. Now that is something for a guy who has used crack for more than ten years.

I liked this book a lot. It has acted as a light at the end of the tunnel. Though I was not a hardcore addict, I have had my fair share of run-ins with the law and wanted to turn sober. However, even after my stay at a rehab center, I was not able to kick out the thought of using drugs from my mind. Taking pity on my condition, my father gave me this book on one condition. He wanted me to read it every day even if it does not make any sense.

Though I felt weird about it at first, I followed his instruction and read the book daily. The first time, none of it made any sense to me, but a second and third read helped me clear my mind from those sickening thoughts and thanks to the book, I am sober for past five years. I still read the book.

Just for Today is a great book. The book has inspirational quotes that give me the perfect kickstart I need for my day. Filled with inspirational quotes, the book has a quote for every single day, yes 365 days of the year. What attracted me to the book was the structure. The day starts with a quote, looks at the day’s topic in a little bit detail, and closes with either affirmation or focusing thought.

Reading the page helps to instill the positive idea in my mind and over a period it has helped me to shun all thoughts of going back to drugs.

Thanks, AA for such a lovely book!!!!!

I use Just For Today to reaffirm myself that I am sober and want to remain the same. JFT is a daily meditation book which is useful for recovering addicts. I read it on a regular basis which has helped me to stay on the track of sobriety and have a positive outlook towards my life. NA has given me second birth and thanks to the efforts of my counselor, parents, wife, and lovely children, I have remained sober for a decade now, and I intend to stay the same forever.

Just For Today has worked wonderfully and I recommend it to all those who want to change their life for good. This book is useful for new recovering addicts as well as those addicts who want some assurance that they are on the right track. Thanks!

I have read many books on affirmation and daily meditation and have to admit that I have been influenced a lot by them. So when I received Just for today as a gift, I was happy. I did a quick read and to say that I was utterly disappointed would be an understatement. The book is not like any other book, and I did not get motivated after reading it. Sorry, but would like to take a pass on this book.

Just for Today: Daily Meditations for Recovering Addicts was a big disappointment. The book written in the 1990s does not seem to work in the modern world. The thinking process of millennial generation is a lot different and a book that talks about God instead of showing how to control one’s thinking process is not going click with them.

I am deeply disappointed and felt that this book would be better suited for those people who think differently than me. I donated my copy to an area group, hoping that at least they could benefit from it.
Before I review Just for Today: Daily Meditations for Recovering Addicts, I have to admit that I am not a recovering addict, I am a recovered addict. I last smoked pot around 25 years back. I had picked up this book from my library wanting to read this book and see if it motivates me. Kind of stupid really, but what the heck, it is just a book.

The book does have some good quotes which can inspire people who can sometimes waver from the track of sobriety. It acts as a friend to these recovering addicts. The structure of the book is also good. Start with a quote, explain the quote and then close it with an affirmation.

Now for the things which I did not like. The book seems very dated and could have had some new quotes. Just for Today might not appeal to the new generation. The focus is more on God and not on higher powers.

Overall, a mixed bag. Just for Today, as the title suggests might appeal to recovering addicts, but for those addicts who have recovered and are looking for some sort of affirmation, this book is not for them.
